Cheryl works as a lecturer and faculty lead for the MA-IDE International Education for Social Responsibility emphasis at Santa Clara University. In 2005 she earned an Ed.D. in International and Multicultural Education with an emphasis in Second Language Acquisition from the University of San Francisco. Understanding the obstacles facing underserved first and second-generation immigrant students in California, she has focused her research efforts on ELL literacy instruction, bilingual cognition, and developing transactional learning communities around the world. Her philosophy of education is community oriented and involves dynamic, equitable transactions between the student, the teacher, knowledge, and the world. She believes that the true value of education lies in its power to transform the individual to effect sustainable and positive change in creating a more peaceful, just, and humane world. Cheryl sees herself as a voice for the voiceless, a conscience for justice, and a visionary for what might be in the world. Recent Publications McElvain, C. (In Press).
