William J. Rewak, S.J., after receiving his Licentiate in Theology from L?Immaculée Conception College in Montreal and his M.A. in Theology from Regis College in Toronto, completed his Ph.D. work in English Literature at the University of Minnesota. He arrived at Santa Clara University in 1970 and began teaching. Appointed Rector of the Jesuit Community in 1971, he continued to teach part-time and was then elected President of the University in December 1976. After two terms as President, in 1988 he took a year?s sabbatical as Visiting Scholar in the English Department of Harvard University. In the fall of 1989, he was elected President of Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. Eight years later, he was appointed Director and Superior of the Jesuit Retreat House in Los Altos. After serving in that position for seven years, he was appointed an administrator in the Jesuit Community of Loyola Marymount University and also taught poetry there. In 2011, Fr. Michael Engh, S.J., President of Santa Clara, appointed him Chancellor of the University. He has published numerous articles on theology, spirituality, literary criticism and current events. He has collected both his published and unpublished poetry in two books, The Right Taxi, and The Orphan Bear.
